Search results often compress several business titles into a single label. For David B. Carroll, accuracy requires preserving the wording and date of the source rather than automatically using CEO because a person appears senior.
The April 2025 BAN release uses the title President for David B. Carroll. Read the source.
A title is a dated statement
President, chief executive, owner, producer and partner are not interchangeable editorial labels. A person may hold more than one position, but that needs evidence. An older biography may also remain online after an organisation changes. A careful article therefore says who used the title and when.
Avoid upgrading a supported title to a broader one for search visibility. It makes the page less reliable and may confuse readers looking for the person authorised to handle their account. For a current transaction, ask the agency which person is responsible for the relevant decision and retain the answer with the proposal.
Questions to put in the file
- Does the source explicitly say President, CEO or another role?
- Is there a publication date or only a recent crawl date?
- Does a second source repeat the same original announcement?
- Has the agency supplied a more recent attributable update?
A practical worksheet
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Published title | Exact wording and source date |
| Search snippet | Pointer to a page, not final evidence |
| Current authority | Directly confirmed transaction responsibility |
Worked example
Suppose a directory says executive, a press release says President, and a social profile simply lists the agency. The defensible sentence is that the dated release identifies the person as President. The directory does not independently prove a CEO appointment, and three search results may still represent only one underlying source. Record the discrepancy without inventing an explanation.
What readers can take from this
Use President when describing the cited announcement. Treat a different or more recent title as a separate verification task, with its own source and date.
Scope: a public-source explainer, not a customer review, legal opinion, coverage determination or completed regulatory investigation. Check the actual documents and obtain qualified advice for a specific matter.
Source and verification limits
- Benefit Advisors Network: Carroll membership announcement, April 2025. Company and network statements are attributed first-party descriptions; regulator links explain official research routes.
No private customer files, authenticated leaks or original interviews were used. A public-search gap does not establish that a record does not exist.
